Trading Devan Dubnyk for Matt Hendricks makes slightly more sense now that the Oilers have acquired another goaltender in 27 year old Ben Scrivens in exchange for a 3rd round pick, but the moves Edmonton is making seem more like tire spinning than progress.
Dubnyk has been a .917 goaltender for the three years coming into this one, and at 27 years old was on an expiring contract and set to go into unrestricted free agency. Having an awful year, he likely wouldn't be in a very good bargaining position, even though he had 120 games of consistent above average goaltending to point to.
Scrivens has been a .917 goaltender over the last three seasons, although only playing 51 games to Dubnyk's 120. At 27 years old he's on an expiring contract and set to go into unrestricted free agency. Having the best year of his career, he's probably looking for a significant raise over his bargain basement contract.
Scrivens has less of a track record than Dubnyk, yet has produced extremely similar results. Is he the answer in Edmonton? That's very difficult to believe.
In total, Edmonton added Matt Hendricks and Ben Scrivens, while saying goodbye to Devan Dubnyk, half his salary, and a third round pick.
